RHN is committed to anti-racism, anti-oppression, equity, inclusiveness, and an intersectional framework. While RHN’s focus is on LGBT health and well-being, within our LGBT communities people experience marginalization for various other reasons as well. Our goal is to build capacity in RHN and in our communities to address these intersections. Making connections and creating partnerships with diverse communities and organizations is the means to this goal.
The Anti-Racism Committee hired a consultant to review organizational practices and provide a report (2005). Committee members met with representatives of various community organizations, organized a panel discussion at Queer Health Matters, and organized an anti-racism training session for RHN members (2006).
In the fall of 2007 the Anti-Racism Committee merged with the Education Committee. Accomplishments include:
2008: a successful grant application to Toronto’s Access and Equity Program; “Training for Change,” a forum for educators at LBGTQ Health Matters Week, in partnership with Among Friends; and “Anti-Racism Workshop: A First Nations Perspective.” led by Percy Lezard. 2-Spirited People of the1st Nations.
2009:
March 14 -Anti-Racism Workshop, led by Douglas Stewart. See "Related News" to download the workshop summary and handouts.
April 16 - Workshop "Deaf Access to Healthcare," led by Jenny Blaser and Ellen Hibbard, in partnership with Ontario Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf and Springtide Resources. Part of LGBTQ Health Matters Week and "Training for Change"
