Ontario Rainbow Health Partnership Project (ORHPP)

The Ontario Rainbow Health Partnership Project (OHRPP) took place in 2005 and was completed in early 2006. It was a joint venture between the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (CLGRO), Rainbow Health Network (RHN) and the Canadian Rainbow Health Coalition (CRHC). CRHC received funding from Health Canada for its project "Rainbow Health - Improving Access to Care." OHRPP was one of 8 projects developed from the 18 proposals submitted.

The project was composed of four streams that paralled somewhat the committee structure of the Rainbow Health Network. The following is a brief outline of the objectives of each stream. Several documents were produced by the  project and are available on this website under "Resources."

STREAM 1 - NORTHERN NETWORKS STREAM

See "The Building of a Rural Alliance"

To learn the unique needs of LGBTTTIQ residents in Northern Ontario and develop models of a network appropriate in such areas, one to two regional meetings will be held, one in Northwestern Ontario, and the other in Northeastern Ontario. The meetings will take place in late Spring 2005 in centres where there are adequate facilities to host the meetings and where a large number of services are provided to the surrounding rural areas.

STREAM 2 - SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH

See "Whose Public Health?" under "Social Determinants of Health"

OBJECTIVE 1: To learn the unique needs of LGBTTTIQ residents in Northern Ontario and develop models of a network appropriate in such areas, one to two regional meetings will be held, one in Northwestern Ontario, and the other in Northeastern Ontario. The meetings will take place in late Spring 2005 in centres where there are adequate facilities to host the meetings and where a large number of services are provided to the surrounding rural areas.

OBJECTIVE 2: To raise awareness among LGBTTTIQ individuals and communities about the rull range of determinants of health, including those related to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Equipped with a critical determinants of health analysis, LGBTTTIQ individuals and communities will be better able to support and advocate for conditions that create and sustain their health and well-being.

STREAM 3 & 4 - EDUCATION TOOLKIT AND PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIPS STREAMS

See "Rainbow Health Educational Toolkit" (under Workshop Toolkit)

and "Interventions / Intersections: Anti-Racism and Queer Organizing" (under Anti-Racism Resources)

OBJECTIVE 1: Partner with provincial health care and social service regulatory bodies, professional associations, and health delivery associations in Ontario, in order to raise awareness and increase knowledge about LGBT health and well-being issues.

OBJECTIVE 2: Partner with CRHC in creating national standardized educational tools for use in the education of health and social service workers and for dissemination to LGBT communities across Ontario.

OBJECTIVE 3: Build the capacity of RHN to address anti-racism and issues of diversity.
